H5N1

Aka 'Avian influenza A' aka 'Bird flu' has caused the price of poultry meat to plummet yet again. I think chicken now costs less than carrots, capsicum and other vegetables. Hurray! ... ?

Here are some pointers to avoid contracting the disease (culled from various sources):
  1. Avoid touching bird shit - check
  2. Avoid touching live birds - check
  3. Ensure the raw meat doesn't touch anything you might eat raw (this is tough if you eat out all the time, gyan angle: keep off the raw stuff, raw stuff is dangerous anyway!) - check (in a convoluted way)
  4. Ensure all parts of the chicken are cooked at over 70oC and that none of the meat is pink - check?
Avoid Empire, Imperial and other places where they make food in a hurry. The 'Kababs' at Empire and Imperial are often pink on the inside ... especially around 2 am.

General chicken curries are harmless because they are pre-boiled for a while and then fried for a while, unless you are a big fan I think you should go with other meat or sea food for the curry.

Tandoors often reach temperatures of over 1000oC, this is if top quality coal is used, even otherwise the temperature will hover around 500oC and generally never goes below 300oC. With smallish pieces you can be certain that the inside will be cooked at temperatures sufficiently beyond 70oC.

Eat those Kababs I say!
